Before you say yes to another research project…read this! 👀

Hey there! 👋🏾

Let me let you in on a secret that took me a while to learn:

Not every research project needs to happen right now. And not every ask deserves your energy.

One of the most powerful (and underrated) skills you can build as a UX Researcher is learning how to prioritize your work—strategically, not reactively.

Because when you know where your work fits into the bigger picture, you stop feeling like an “order taker” and start owning your seat at the table. 👏🏾

Here’s the framework I use to figure out what’s worth my time and my team’s:

🎯 Step 1: Know the Business Goals

Start with the bigger picture.

  • What is the company or product team trying to achieve this quarter?
  • If your research doesn’t help move those goals forward, it might not be the priority right now.

📌 Step 2: Map What’s at Stake

Get curious and ask:

• What decision will this research inform?

• What happens if we don’t do this study?

• How big is the opportunity (or risk) here?

If the answers are vague, it might be time to pause and reframe.

⏳ Step 3: Balance Timing + Impact

Every project isn’t a fire drill. Zoom out and consider:

• Quick wins vs. long-term plays

• High-impact vs. low-impact

• What aligns with the product roadmap—and what can wait?

Not everything needs to be tackled right now.

🧠 TLDR:

Strong researchers don’t just ask great questions.

They ask: “Is this the right question to ask right now?”

That’s what makes you a strategic partner overall, not just a great researcher. So next time you’re asked to jump into a new project, take a moment to use this framework. It’ll help you protect your energy while maximizing your impact at the same time.

✨ Save this for your next planning session, trust me you’ll thank yourself later.

All the best,

Hi Reader 👋🏾 Let me tell you something...no, AI isn’t here to replace UX researchers. But it can help you work smarter, not harder. Think of AI as your research co-pilot. It won’t do the job for you, but it can take the pressure off repetitive tasks, help you move faster, and sharpen the work only you can do. It frees you up to focus on the part that matters most—your critical thinking, empathy, and insight. That’s where you excel as a researcher. Here's how some researchers I know are...

Hey Reader, You know those moments when you just wish you could get feedback from someone who really gets it? Someone who’s reviewed 100s of resumes, built design teams, and understands what hiring managers are really looking for? Well… you’re in luck. Hi Reader 👋🏾 One of the most important skills in UX research often doesn’t get the attention it deserves: the ability to define clear, focused research objectives. It sounds simple, but writing strong objectives—ones that drive clarity and impact—takes more than a quick brainstorm or a reused slide. It takes strategic thinking, practice, and intention. When your objectives are dialed in, everything runs more smoothly.. Teams are aligned Methods are more effective Insights are easier to act on...
